Sara Duterte, the vice president of the Philippines, has announced her intention to run for president in the 2028 election. The declaration was made by the 47-year-old as she and incumbent President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. are engaged in a sour power battle. Candidates in the Philippines’ primarily personality-based elections are known to train for years before the presidential election, which is two years away. Marcos cannot run for reelection, and his supporters have not yet put up a candidate to fight Duterte, who is also the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
The vice president declared, “I offer my life, my strength, and my future in the service of our nation.”My name is Sara Duterte. I’m going to run for Philippine president.” In the 2022 election, Marcos and Duterte ran on the same ticket and won handily. However, since they pursued different political objectives, the coalition quickly fell apart. When Marcos permitted the International Criminal Court to arrest Sara’s father in March 2025, the conflict erupted in a spectacular way. As he awaits prosecution for crimes against humanity related to his brutal war on drugs, the elder Duterte is currently being held in The Hague.
Two months later, candidates backed by the Duterte family defeated those nominated by Marcos in a midterm legislative vote that was interpreted as a gauge of support for the current administration. A little more than a week ago, the vice president was the target of an impeachment complaint from Catholic clergy members for alleged corruption, which she denies.
