Since the beginning of Israel’s war with Iran, there has been an increase in Jewish settlers’ violence against Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The European Union and the United Kingdom have asked that Israel stop this trend. The United Nations reports that within the last 11 days, settlers have attacked various parts of the West Bank, killing six Palestinians.
The EU stated that the degree of settler violence was intolerable, while the UK expressed shock over the killings. In order to guarantee accountability and stop other assaults, both called on Israeli authorities to intervene.
The Israeli military stated it was trying to hold the perpetrators accountable while denouncing the violence. Since occupying the West Bank and East Jerusalem during the 1967 Middle East War, Israel has constructed over 160 settlements that house 700,000 Jews. The Palestinians desire this land, along with Gaza, for a future state. They coexist with an estimated 3.3 million Palestinians.
A settler raid on the Palestinian community of Khirbet Abu Falah, northeast of Ramallah, on Sunday resulted in the deaths of three Palestinians. Witnesses told the Reuters news agency that dozens of settlers attacked the area before daybreak that day. They claimed that armed settlers arrived and started shooting when locals confronted them, including by hurling stones.
