US President Donald Trump released a typically forceful statement following Wednesday’s attacks on a major gas facility shared by Iran and Qatar. Israel struck Iran’s South Pars, part of the world’s largest natural gas field, and Tehran responded by striking an energy complex in Qatar. The attacks caused an increase in energy prices, fueling Trump’s rage.
On his Truth Social media platform, Trump threatened Iran once more and claimed he was unaware of Israel’s intentions for the strike. So, what does the language employed by the US president tell us about the war’s progress and the extent to which the US and Israel agree on strategy and goals?
The president claims that the US “knew nothing about this particular attack.” This contradicts various newspaper reporting from Israel following the strike. According to the centrist newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, the attack was planned in advance with the US and agreed upon by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Trump.
According to the right-wing newspaper Israel Hayom, “President Trump discussed the upcoming Israeli strike in [Iran’s coastal city of] Asaluyeh with leaders of three Persian Gulf states over the weekend”.
