At Least 21 People are Missing in the Philippines After a Building Collapsed on a Construction Site

According to police, at least one person was killed when a building under construction in the Philippines fell on Sunday, while rescuers searched the rubble for 21 individuals who had been reported missing.

Officials said an investigation has been initiated into the reason of the multi-story building collapse in Angeles, north of Manila. The building fell on itself at around 3am (7pm GMT Saturday), severely destroying a nearby hotel where two of the 26 people who were rescued had been staying, they added.

Authorities stated the person determined to have perished was a 65-year-old Malaysian national whose body was discovered in a neighboring structure, a hotel, which was also damaged by the fall. Maria Leah Sajili, information officer at the area Bureau of Fire Protection, told a news briefing that five of the 21 people reported missing were confirmed trapped.

Rescue efforts were ongoing, but Sajili cautioned that activities would grow increasingly difficult after nightfall. According to officials, the authorized permit called for a nine-story condo-hotel, but a swimming pool was being built on the tenth floor.
