Graham Platner’s quick ascent from relative obscurity to the Democratic nominee in this year’s most important US Senate race has now come to a disastrous end. On Wednesday night, the oysterman and former Marine who defeated a well-liked governor and established a grassroots network of over 15,000 supporters in Maine declared he was quitting his campaign. Just over 48 hours after Politico published an article detailing an ex-girlfriend’s claims that an inebriated Platner had broken into her home without permission in 2021 and sexually attacked her, the revelation was revealed through a recorded video shared on social media.
He has refuted the accusation.In his 11-minute video marking the end of his campaign, Platner stated, “We went toe to toe with one of the most entrenched political systems in the history of the world, and we won.” “And now they are not going to let us have it, not if it’s me.” Platner was selected by his party to challenge five-term Senator Susan Collins, the only Republican in Congress representing a state that Democrats won in the 2024 presidential election. Platner had been supported by liberal mainstays like Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren.
This election has become critical for Democrats. They must protect all of their seats and flip four Republican-held ones in order to win the Senate in November’s midterm elections. Many people believe that Maine is a target that must be won. Their hopes are now in danger of being severely damaged by Platner’s departure.
