As Qatar observed the third day of national mourning for Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who ruled the country from 1995 to 2013 and is widely credited with turning Qatar from a small Gulf emirate into a global power in energy, diplomacy, and media, world leaders continued to arrive in Doha on Wednesday. Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani received condolences from senior European and Middle Eastern leaders who travelled to the capital.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is one of the people scheduled to visit Doha. The visit coincides with the ongoing high level of tension between Tehran and Washington, resulting from renewed military exchanges in the Gulf.
French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili, and Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh of Britain, were among the notable European leaders who also visited Qatar. In a demonstration of Sheikh Hamad’s lengthy connections throughout the Middle East, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan arrived in Doha earlier on Wednesday. On Wednesday, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye also travelled to Doha as Qatar’s representative to African leaders.
