In his first significant interview as prime minister, Andy Burnham says he would be willing to confront Donald Trump to protect Britain’s “national interest before anything else” if it is the right thing to do.
In an exclusive interview with the BBC, Burnham described Trump as “really warm” and claimed he had a positive first encounter with him. It’s a changing world isn’t it, and you just obviously have to call things as they develop” was his response when asked twice if he would trust the US president.
“I can’t at any point say that I won’t take a different opinion from him [Trump], that I will need to voice a different idea that is right for Britain,” he stated in the interview, which will be shown in its entirety on Monday.Burnham said: “My strength is remaining close to people, close to the public, that will not change as prime minister.
He responded “of course” when asked if he would criticize Trump if it was the proper thing to do, adding, “You have to defend your own national interest before anything else. If you want to complete this task correctly, you must do it.
