Gloria Steinem, who rose to prominence as a leader of the women’s liberation movement in the United States, passed away at the age of 92. On Wednesday, her foundation announced on Instagram that she “passed away peacefully” at her residence in New York City, “surrounded by many who loved her. More than fifty years ago, Steinem, a writer and magazine editor, co-founded the Women’s Action Alliance, a group that was dedicated to combating sexism.
She began her career as a journalist in New York and later co-founded Ms. magazine, one of the first publications to focus on women’s issues beyond housekeeping and cosmetics.
Steinem was, among other causes, a vocal advocate for women’s reproductive rights during the 1970s. She herself underwent an illegal abortion in London at the age of 22. Subsequently, she commemorated the 1973 ruling of the United States Supreme Court in the case of Roe v Wade, which granted women the constitutional right to abortion. She observed the reversal of this decision nearly fifty years later. In addition, she advocated for the legalisation of same-sex marriage, equal rights and pay for women, and opposed the death penalty and female genital mutilation.
