Due to the withdrawal of A-listers Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey, the planned London reprise of Sunday in the Park With George has been scrapped. Next year, the Wicked stars were scheduled to reconvene on stage in the Stephen Sondheim production at the Barbican. As part of her desire to step back from the spotlight following the conclusion of her Eternal Sunshine Tour, Grande announced last month that she was leaving the musical.
Bailey also announced his withdrawal from the show earlier this month. The musical will no longer be performed in 2027, according to a Monday announcement from production company Empire Street Productions, which had previously stated it would proceed as scheduled. “The planned 2027 production of Sunday in the Park with George at the Barbican will no longer proceed as scheduled,” the company announced in a statement.In order to deliver the production in 2028, Empire Street Productions will hold onto the rights. In due course, further information will be revealed.
The original musical was written by American composer Sondheim and playwright James Lapine, and it made its Broadway debut in 1984. The French painter Georges Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, in which a fictionalised version of the artist is consumed by his work, served as the inspiration for Sunday in the Park with George.
