After the weekend’s chaos, thunder and lightning have erupted around Marseille, illuminating the boarded-up doors and damaged windows of hundreds of shops that were destroyed when protests turned violent. Chaos swept around France on Saturday, with some of the worst violence occurring in the country’s second city. More than 500 businesses were damaged, and most of them were plundered, according to local business leaders. For his coworkers, the weekend had been an “apocalyptic” misery, a police union boss told the BBC. 118 officers more than a tenth of the total were hurt.
Children make up 25% of the 101 arrests made in the port city so far. However, on Monday, police, not protesters, were most visible on the city’s streets. To prevent a third day in a row of chaos, police banned protests and gatherings for eight hours. It appeared to be effective, as evidenced by the largest concentrated gathering we saw a group of weather-beaten visitors lumbering along the quayside. However, starting Tuesday night, some areas of the city will implement an overnight curfew for children. Additionally, a midnight curfew implemented in several areas of Paris on Monday has been extended.
