The Duchess of Sussex has stated that she was made aware of “disturbing allegations” concerning her estranged father in 2018. In a statement, Meghan said a letter detailing charges against Thomas Markle was sent to the Metropolitan Police that year and later shared with her.
Her statements follow accusations that photographs of child sexual assault purportedly belonging to her father were discovered at his former house in the Philippines. Thomas Markle, who is 82 and lives in the United States, denies holding such photographs.
The Duchess spoke on the allegations, which were first revealed by The Sun newspaper, saying: “I am deeply distressed by the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed.”
She stated that she was “given assurance that these were being investigated” when she received the letter summarising charges against her father. She said that she hoped it would be understood why she had kept her distance from her father and “not allowed him to have contact with our children”. Meghan explained this was “to protect them,” adding that she had “believed that the authorities were doing the same for other families.
