A guy was rescued alive after being buried for eight days in the wreckage of a building in Venezuela that collapsed following twin earthquakes. More than 100 hours after finding Hernán Gil under 140 tonnes of rubble, emergency workers were able to liberate him. A Chilean firefighter had previously described the rescue effort as “without a doubt the most complex and technically difficult that I’ve had to tackle.”
Almost 2,300 people are documented to have killed in the earthquakes that slammed Venezuela on June 24th, while tens of thousands are still missing. Allan Madrigal, a paramedic with the Costa Rican Red Cross, informed reporters at the scene that Gil had “emerged just perfect” from his trauma. Madrigal, the rescuer, heard Gil’s weak calls for aid emerging from the rubble on Sunday.things was an emotional moment,” he recounted, noting that at first, he had not trusted his own ears and had asked a coworker to clarify that he “wasn’t just dreaming things.” From that point forward, rescuers rushed to extract the security guy.
Gil had been working in a small concrete booth in the bottom of the parking lot next to the Galerias Playa Grande mall in Catia La Mar when the twin quakes struck. The booth shielded him from the 140 tons of rubble that fell around and on top of him.”He has told us that he doesn’t even have a crushed nail,” claimed another Costa Rican Red Cross worker soon before Gil was rescued from the rubble.
