According to officials on Thursday, the highly decorated Army soldier inside the Tesla Cybertruck that caught fire outside of President-elect Donald Trump’s hotel in Las Vegas shot himself in the head before the explosion and probably intended to do more damage, but the explosive was crude and the steel-sided vehicle took most of the force.
A revolver was discovered at the foot of the man, who authorities suspect to be Matthew Livelsberger, according to Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill at a press conference. Authorities think the gunshot was self-inflicted. The truck’s interior sustained the majority of the blast’s damage. According to the sheriff, the explosion “vented out and up” and missed the Trump hotel doors, which were only a few feet away.
We wouldn’t anticipate this degree of complexity from someone with this kind of military background,” stated Kenny Cooper, a special agent in charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
A second firearm, several fireworks, a passport, a military ID, credit cards, an iPhone, and a smartwatch were among the other burnt objects discovered inside the truck, according to McMahill. According to authorities, both firearms were lawfully purchased. Although Livelsberger’s remains have not been positively identified by investigators, the sheriff stated that the body’s tattoos and identification “give a strong indication that it’s him.
