Authorities in Saudi Arabia closed schools in several areas on Monday due to flash floods and heavy rain that flooded the roads. The most recent example of severe rain interfering with daily life in the Kingdom was cancelling some flights from Jeddah airport. Social media users posted videos of cars in central Makkah that were partially flooded and having difficulty moving through standing water. A local reported that the rain persisted for seven hours, from dawn till afternoon, and eventually reached extremely high levels.
Al-Qahtani clarified that the rainy conditions are still present throughout the Kingdom, with the Al-Basatin district in Jeddah recording the most rainfall (38 mm) and the Prophet’s Mosque’s central area receiving 36 mm. For everyone’s safety, he urged vigilance in adhering to the directives and cautions given by the appropriate authorities.
According to the National Center of Meteorology, there will likely be more medium-to-heavy thunderstorms, which will bring with them heavy rain, hail, and wind that stirs up dust and dirt in areas of Northern Borders, Al-Jawf, Hail, Madinah, as well as parts of Qassim, Eastern Province, Riyadh, Makkah Al-Mukarramah, and Al-Baha.
