This year’s Great Arab Minds prize in the Architecture category went to an architect whose works combine modernism and tradition, nature and identity.
The UAE’s vice president, prime minister, and ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, congratulated Jordanian architect Sahel Al Hiyari on his victory on X on Friday. Al Hiyari received the esteemed honor in recognition of his groundbreaking work in contemporary Arab architecture.
Through the use of regional materials and methods, his projects highlight sustainability and attention to local context, protecting natural resources while strengthening cultural identity. His creative creations demonstrate a deep affinity for the local environment and topography.
Along with his architectural work, Al Hiyari has taught at Harvard University, Columbia University, Jordan University of Science and Technology, and the American University of Beirut. He has also contributed to studies on modern architecture. The most notable individuals in the Arab world who have made revolutionary contributions in a variety of sectors are honored and empowered by the Great Arab Minds Award.
