Tech tycoon Elon Musk said on Saturday that he was delaying his trip to India, where he was scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss significant investment plans.
Musk’s electric car firm announced the recall of roughly 4,000 Cybertruck vehicles the day before due to an acceleration pedal fault that raised crash risks.
Last month, the government lowered import taxes on electric vehicles for multinational automakers that pledged to invest $500 million and begin local manufacture within three years. Tesla was reportedly looking at possible locations for factories in India.
The program additionally permits businesses to import with much lower import duties up to 8,000 electric automobiles each year priced at $35,000 or more. The Indian media reported that Tesla may import vehicles from its Berlin factory before deciding where to locate a production line.
Musk only has X, formerly known as Twitter, as his current commercial interest in India.
Free speech campaigners have questioned him about his social media site allegedly resisting the Indian government’s demands to remove critical messages.
Musk, who has called himself a supporter of Modi, last traveled to India in 2007. He described it as “amazing” and said that the Taj Mahal “truly is a wonder of the world.
