After President Donald Trump pledged to seize the autonomous Danish territory, ties between the US and Greenland reached a new low when the prime minister of Greenland called a planned visit by US officials, including second lady Usha Vance, “highly aggressive.”
According to a White House statement, Vance, the wife of US Vice President JD Vance, will visit Greenland this week to observe the island’s national dogsled race and “celebrate Greenlandic culture and unity.” According to a person knowledgeable about the plan, national security adviser Mike Waltz is also anticipated to travel to the area this week.
In an interview with the Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq on Sunday, Greenland Prime Minister Mute B. Egede referred to the US delegation’s visit to the island as “highly aggressive” and specifically objected to Waltz’s presence.
As the US, Russia, and China compete for dominance in the Arctic, Trump’s plan to annex Greenland has brought the region—which contains enormous reserves of rare earth materials essential for high-tech industries to the world’s attention and sparked concerns about its future security. Despite Denmark and Greenland’s strong opposition, Trump has frequently indicated interest in the US annexing the island by economic pressure or force.
