Kim Jong Un, who is said to have died from a brain bleed, has shown up in North Korean state media looking astonishingly well. The 42-year-old tyrant is shown touring a clothes-and-footwear exhibition, which the state daily Rodong Sinmun described, with his daughter. The pictures surfaced just hours after a Chinese dissident living in the United States made an unsupported claim that Kim had died after being sent to a Beijing hospital in a coma. This kind of speculation has nearly become commonplace for those who keep a close eye on North Korea.
Facts are often hard to confirm in one of the world’s most secretive states, which encourages conjecture. Wanjun Xie, who claims to be the chairman of the Chinese Democratic Party that Chinese authorities have outlawed, is the source of this most recent allegation. In the past, he has made unsubstantiated claims, such as including speculation about the death of Chinese leader Xi Jinping. According to Xie, Kim had a serious brain hemorrhage and was sent to Beijing because North Korea lacked the medical resources to care for him. He asserted that Kim’s death was later concealed by the authorities and that his body had been covertly repatriated to North Korea.
