Chinese leader Xi Jinping is getting ready to host a significant political event to demonstrate confidence in his nation’s capacity to persevere and withstand external challenges, even as President Donald Trump imposes tariffs on America’s top trading partners and enacts extensive reforms across the US government.
As thousands of delegates gather in the Chinese capital for the nation’s “two sessions” annual conference, Trump intensified his trade war with China. Xi and his colleagues are expected to portray China as a great power continuously improving its technological capabilities and rising to prominence in the world at the highly staged event.
Furthermore, Beijing has stated that the biggest economy in the world will not pressure it. China retaliated by slapping retaliatory tariffs of up to 15% on certain American goods, increasing export controls to US firms, and filed a case at the World Trade Organization after Trump’s White House hiked the levy on all Chinese imports to 20% on Tuesday.
China’s Commerce Ministry denounced the additional US tariffs earlier in the day as “a typical unilateral and bullying behavior” and charged Washington of ignoring international trade regulations, facts, and the opinions of all parties.
