A historic executive order designating English as the official language of the United States is about to be signed by President Donald Trump. According to the Associated Press on Friday, this will be the first time a national language is formally recognized in the country’s history.
A directive by the former president Bill Clinton administration that required agencies and beneficiaries of federal funding to provide substantial language help for non-native English speakers would be revoked by the presidential order. Agencies will be able to choose how and when to offer services in languages other than English thanks to the new order.
The White House has reportedly said that even though hundreds of languages are spoken in the US, English is still the most widely used language. Adopting a national language, according to the administration, also contributes to national unity.
This choice aligns with President Trump’s attempts to cut back on government funding for programs that advance inclusion, equity, and diversity. President Trump ordered federal agencies to stop awarding grants or contracts related to equity shortly after he took office. Later, he sent out a follow-up order asking federal contractors to attest that they don’t support DEI programs.
