Ukraine Loses a Troubled Town in the East

As Russia continues its steady, if sluggish, advance, Ukrainian forces have left the troubled eastern town of Siversk. Russian forces had a “significant advantage in manpower,” according to the Ukrainian military, which stated it took action “to preserve the lives of our soldiers and the combat capability of units” on Tuesday.

Russia is now closer to the last “fortress belt” cities in the industrial Donetsk region that are still under Ukrainian control, Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, thanks to the conquest of Siversk. Earlier in the day, authorities reported that large overnight Russian drone and missile strikes on Ukraine had killed three people, including a small child.

The Ukrainian military claimed in a statement that Russian forces were still engaged in “active offensive actions” “despite significant losses  in the Siversk region. Ukrainian defence forces had exhausted the enemy during the fighting for Siversk,” it continued.

Roughly 11,000 people were living in Siversk prior to the Russian invasion. Russia had already claimed control of the town two weeks prior, although Ukraine refuted the assertion at the time.
