The most recent action by the president to imprint his personal image on American institutions is the inclusion of Donald Trump’s portrait on a US coin. In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, the US Mint issued the $1 (£0.74) coin on Wednesday, which features a portrait of Trump and the phrases “Liberty” and “In God We Trust.”
The Mint stated that the coins, which are being marketed as collectables, were not being placed into circulation for daily use. The law prohibits the depiction of living presidents on US currency; however, a design clause in the anniversary legislation was employed to circumvent this restriction.
The mint’s website indicated that the coins, which were priced at $61 for a roll of 25 and $154.50 for a bag of 100, were “not currently in stock” within hours of their release. However, it also stated that additional coins are being produced. The coins were also being sold in vending machines at the US Mint store in Washington, DC.
The BBC has reached out to the US Mint, the Treasury, and the White House to obtain additional information. The coins have a golden hue; however, they contain no actual gold. The US Mint says they are composed of 88.5% copper, with the remainder consisting of zinc, nickel, and a manganese brass outer layer. The US Mint stated that the coin was “designed to commemorate this historic national milestone” and is “destined to become a distinctive addition to modern collections.
