Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) implemented three significant traffic enhancements on Sheikh Zayed Road to increase road capacity and efficiency. These actions align with RTA’s strategic plans to build the road network and mobility systems, guaranteeing efficient traffic flow in crucial locations to keep up with the fast urbanisation and growth of the emirate.
“RTA places great emphasis on enhancing road network, with the Sheikh Zayed Road being a top priority,” said Abdullah Lootah, Director of Road and Facilities Maintenance at the Traffic and Roads Agency. Surrounded by residential neighbourhoods and significant commercial and financial landmarks, such as the Dubai International Financial Centre, Burj Khalifa, and Dubai Mall, it functions as a thriving economic centre and one of the emirate’s main thoroughfares.
The first of these traffic improvements include adding a lane for vehicles going towards Al Manara and expanding the merging lengths between Umm Al Sheif Street and Al Manara Street in the direction of Abu Dhabi. The improvement is expected to greatly improve entry and exit flows by increasing vehicle capacity in this direction by 30%,” he continued.
In the second enhancement, the service road exit in front of the Shangri-La Hotel is modified to go to the First Interchange on Sheikh Zayed Road, which is close to the Dubai Mall. To improve traffic flow and reduce congestion at this crucial site, the work entails extending the merging lengths between the service road entry and the exit towards Al Safa Street and Dubai Mall.
