First Early Ballots in the Tight US Presidential Contest Cast

On Friday, the first early voters in the tight US presidential race in November cast their votes, with Democratic nominee Kamala Harris on her way to a campaign rally centred on the divisive topic of abortion.

Early voting was underway in three US states: Virginia, Minnesota, and South Dakota. Republican nominee Donald Trump has previously questioned the procedure, claiming to have won the 2020 election erroneously.

AFP journalists observed throngs of people waiting at an early voting polling place in the heart of Arlington, Virginia, which is located just outside of the nation’s capital, Washington.

Some wore “Harris-Walz” t-shirts, while the building’s front had some “Trump-Vance” banners. 55-year-old Michelle Kilkenny declared, “I’m excited,” and added that casting a ballot early—especially on election day—helps the campaign and increases enthusiasm.

The majority of US states allow mail-in or in-person voting for those with scheduling issues or who cannot cast a ballot on election day, November 5.

Former President Trump has consistently attacked any voting method other than on-the-day voting, blaming mail-in votes for Joe Biden’s victory over him in 2020. He has also occasionally questioned early voting, even though his campaign has attempted to encourage it.
