As hostilities intensify between Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hizbollah, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a warning on Sunday about the possibility of turning Lebanon into “another Gaza.”
Before the yearly assembly of world leaders at the UN, Guterres spoke with CNN and expressed scepticism about the likelihood of an end to the eleven-month-long conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
“It is evident to me that neither side favours a ceasefire. And that is tragic because we need to end this war,” Guterres stated.
The ceasefire is not something that the Israeli government or Hamas truly desire.” After Israel and Hizbollah’s cross-border fighting grew more intense this week, Guterres stated, “What concerns me (is) the possibility of transforming Lebanon (into) another Gaza.”
For almost a year, Hizbollah fighters have exchanged gunfire across the border with Israel in apparent support of Hamas, whose attack on Israel on October 7 set off the current conflict in Gaza.
But after severely weakening Hamas, Israel has turned its attention to its northern border, and as a result, the clashes have intensified in recent weeks.
