At The age of 90, Former MI5 Director General Dame Stella Rimington Passes Away

According to her relatives, Dame Stella Rimington, the first female director general of MI5, has away. Many people believe that Dame Stella, who led the security agency from 1992 to 1996, served as the inspiration for Dame Judi Dench’s character M in the James Bond movies.

She began working for MI5 full-time in 1969, and after serving as deputy director general in 1991, she was elevated to director general the following year. Following her retirement from the military, Dame Stella started working as a novelist. She died surrounded by her beloved family and dogs and resolutely held on to the life she loved until her last breath,” her family said in a statement.

As the first director general to be publicly named upon appointment, Dame Stella and her family were forced to relocate to a secret place for their safety after a newspaper published a picture of her home.

As the first female head of any intelligence agency in history to be officially acknowledged, his predecessor “broke through long-standing barriers and was a visible example of the importance of diversity in leadership,” said current MI5 director general Sir Ken McCallum in a tribute.
