According to Trump, British Soldiers in Afghanistan are Among the Greatest of all Warriors

Donald Trump has praised British troops who served in Afghanistan after facing strong criticism for comments suggesting allied forces stayed away from front line combat. Earlier this week, the US president drew backlash from Nato allies after playing down their role in the war and questioning whether the alliance would support the United States if it were ever under threat. His remarks were widely condemned, with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer calling them “insulting and frankly appalling”.

Following a phone call between the two leaders on Saturday, Trump shifted his tone. On his Truth Social platform, he described UK soldiers as “among the greatest of all warriors.”

The controversy began after an interview with Fox News on Thursday, in which Trump claimed Nato troops were rarely needed by the US and suggested that forces sent to Afghanistan stayed away from active fighting. The comments prompted anger from veterans, military families and politicians in the UK and beyond, many of whom called on Trump to apologise.

Prince Harry also weighed in, saying the sacrifices made by allied troops must be respected. He noted that Nato’s collective defence clause has only been invoked once, following the 9/11 attacks.
