Ryanair Warned of ‘Queue Pandemonium’ With The New EU Border Arrangement

Ryanair and Berlin Airport’s CEO have warned of serious disruptions to summer travel due to the new digital EU border check system. Ryanair warned that families will experience “queue chaos” and urged governments to postpone the system until after the summer holiday period.

According to Berlin Airport’s Aletta von Massenbach, non-EU nationals are having to line for up to two hours under the new method, and the situation is “not bearable over the summer”.

Under the EU’s Entry-Exit System (EES), visitors from outside the bloc must submit biometric information while entering most European nations, which is then checked when they leave. The European Commission (EC) says it is open to provide additional assistance.

Von Massenback told the BBC’s Today programme that waiting periods at one terminal in Berlin, where Ryanair and Wizz Air operate, can last “an hour to two hours”. Neal McMahon, Ryanair’s senior operations officer, stated, “Passengers and families should not be used as guinea pigs for a half-baked passport control system that risks creating long queues, missed flights, and unnecessary stress at airports this summer. The airline reported substantial difficulties at airports including Tenerife South, Palma, Alicante, Malaga, Milan Bergamo, Krakow, and Paris Beauvais.
