Due to the ongoing financial impact of the US-Israel war with Iran, drivers in the US are paying more than ever for diesel at the pump. The majority of commercial vehicles in the US, including trucks, trains, boats, buses, farming vehicles, and construction vehicles, run on diesel. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), the average price of a gallon of diesel in the US has reached $5.85, up from an average of $3.71 a year ago and above the previous high during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Since the start of the Iranian crisis at the end of February, fuel costs have skyrocketed, mirroring the increase in wholesale oil prices.
Nicolás Maduro, the former leader of Venezuela, was apprehended by US special forces in January after President Trump approved a raid. According to Interim Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez, the most recent agreement, which was made public on Saturday, calls for “an investment of more than $100bn (£73.9bn) and more than $209bn in taxes” for Venezuela in addition to the development of 17 strategic oil fields with a proven potential of 65 billion barrels. A US official told CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, that 55% of a joint venture with a “experienced private operator in Venezuela” will remain under US government control.
