After Months of Political Unrest, the Opposition in South Korea Wins the Presidency.

Six months after his predecessor’s attempt to impose martial law failed, opposition candidate Lee Jae-myung has won a resounding win in South Korea. The short-lived but catastrophic action sparked massive demonstrations and put an end to the career of former president Yoon Suk Yeol, who was impeached and removed from office but is currently being prosecuted for abuse of authority.

However, Lee’s greatest obstacle remains because of the political turmoil that ensued. He needs to bring a divided nation that is still in shock together. To mitigate the impact of tariffs from South Korea’s closest friend, he must negotiate a trade agreement with US President Donald Trump.

His principal opponent was Kim Moon-soo, a former member of Yoon’s cabinet and the ruling party candidate. He congratulated Lee “on his victory” and admitted defeat in the early hours of Wednesday after falling behind Lee in the polls for weeks.

Lee had alluded to the victory in a previous speech but refrained from announcing it. He declared that his top goal will be recovering” South Korea’s democracy. Only three years have passed since the 61-year-old narrowly lost to Yoon in his previous attempt to become president. It’s a stunning turnaround for a man who has been embroiled in several political scandals, ranging from personal disputes to enquiries into suspected corruption.
