Due to The Singapore Gift Incident, an F1 Tycoon was Fined $23,000

A Singaporean millionaire who had previously entered a guilty plea to a charge related to a gift scandal that rocked the nation last year was fined $23,400 (S$30,000; £17,251). Hotel magnate Ong Beng Seng has acknowledged aiding former transport minister Subramaniam Iswaran in concealing evidence during the latter’s corruption investigation.

While they were on official business, Ong offered Iswaran lavish presents, such as a private jet ride and an all-expense-paid trip. Given his ill health, a court decided to offer the 79-year-old “judicial mercy” instead than the maximum sentence of seven years in prison.

Ong had asked Iswaran to visit Qatar in December 2022, promising to cover all of his costs, including lodging and a travel on Ong’s private aircraft to Doha. Ong replied that he would make arrangements for Iswaran to take a commercial flight from Doha to Singapore once he accepted the offer but stated that he would have to return to Singapore on a specific date.

However, it was only after learning that Singapore’s corruption agency was investigating the flight as part of a separate case involving Ong’s acquaintances that Iswaran ordered Ong’s company to bill him for the business class ticket home, which was reportedly worth S$5,700.
