It’s possible that European leaders hurried to Washington in an attempt to shield President Zelensky from a recurrence of the Oval Office brawl that occurred in February. However, their true goal is to prevent US President Donald Trump from endangering the long-term security of Europe following his sudden shift in strategy over the best way to end the war in Ukraine.
According to diplomats, Trump not only abandoned calls for a ceasefire as a precondition for discussions on a lasting settlement, but he also made it apparent that he had no plans to impose additional economic sanctions on Russia. To put it briefly, the traveling heads of state from Europe, along with leaders from the EU and NATO, wish to avoid both conflict and surrender.
It takes a lot of effort for heads of state to change their plans at short notice, particularly in August when some are on vacation.
On the Riviera, the French leader was having fun with water sports. Giorgia Meloni, the Italian leader, had visited Greece. However, the European leaders quickly altered their plans due to the magnitude of President Trump’s strategic change following his meeting with President Putin and the resulting threat to Europe.
