The U.S. President Donald Trump’s return to the presidency, the war in Gaza and Ukraine, the growing Western acceptance of Palestinian independence, and nuclear tensions with Iran are the main topics of discussion at the U.N. General Assembly, where world leaders will meet in New York next week.
U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated a week before the 193-member world organisation hosts six days of addresses by around 150 heads of state or government and dozens more ministers, “We are gathering in turbulent, even uncharted waters.
Geopolitical divisions are growing. Wars are going on. Punishment is increasing. He warned reporters on Tuesday that “our planet is overheating.” And under strains we have never experienced before, international collaboration is struggling.
Trump will be the main speaker at this year’s 80th General Assembly. Trump has called for cutting back on U.S. support to the U.N., halted U.S. involvement with the U.N. Human Rights Council, put a stop to funding for the Palestinian relief organization UNRWA, and resigned from the U.N. cultural body UNESCO. Plans to leave the World Health Organisation and the Paris Climate Accord have also been declared.
Eight months into his second term, Trump will address on Tuesday. The U.S. has drastically reduced its foreign aid, which has caused humanitarian disasters around the world and prompted Guterres to try to reduce expenses and increase efficiency.
