According to Officials, Several Are Thought Dead in the Indonesian School Collapse

Rescuers have stated that there are “no signs of life” beneath the debris of a burned-out school in Indonesia, where 59 people are still unaccounted for. The two-story Islamic boarding school in the town of Sidoarjo fell on Monday, engulfing hundreds of students, the majority of whom were teenage guys. Officials reported at least five students were murdered and over 100 injured.

Two individuals later passed away in the hospital, while 13 people have been released from the wreckage since rescue operations started. The construction of the building was weak, making rescue attempts difficult. Using thermal drones, rescuers were unable to find any indications of life in the rubble, according to the disaster mitigation agency (BNBP) on Thursday.

We even [cleared] the area last night to guarantee silence. With the use of advanced technology, [we] hoped to hear some indications of life. BNBP chief Lt Gen Suharyanto stated during a press conference Thursday afternoon.

He continued by saying that the group has decided to proceed to the “next phase of operations, which involves moving concrete slabs with the use of large machinery. Either cranes will be used to raise these slabs of trash, or they will be cut into smaller pieces. Earlier, rescuers had been unable to do this because of concerns that it might cause the structure to collapse further, endangering the lives of any potential survivors.
