UN Analysts Caution that Trump’s Peace Plan for Gaza May Lead to Worse Repression

US President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Gaza contains important components that violate international law and run the risk of worsening Palestinian suffering, dozens of UN experts warned Friday.

It is a recipe for more injustice, future violence, and instability to impose an immediate peace at any cost, regardless of or blatantly against law and justice,” 35 independent experts from the United Nations warned in a statement.

Regarding over a dozen elements of the 20-point plan, which was supported by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and presented by the US president last week, they expressed grave concerns. The UN Human Rights Council-mandated experts stated that they “welcome part of the peace plan” but do not speak for the UN.

They celebrated the call for a long-term truce, the swift release of those who had been wrongfully jailed, and a flood of humanitarian assistance. They also applauded the demand that Israeli forces leave Gaza and refuse to annex the region or forcibly relocate its residents.

Special rapporteur on rights in the Palestinian territory Francesca Albanese was among the experts who emphasized that any peace plan must guarantee accountability and self-determination and “not create further conditions of oppression.
