Jimmy Cliff, an 81-Year-Old Reggae Superstar, Passes Away

At the age of 81, Jimmy Cliff, one of the most well-known and cherished advocates of Reggae music, passed away. He has been a star since the 1960s, and with classics like Wonderful World, Beautiful People, and You Can Get It If You Really Want, he helped popularize Jamaican music worldwide.

A mainstay of Jamaican cinema, his portrayal of a gun-wielding rebel in the 1972 crime drama The Harder They Come is credited with introducing reggae to the United States. Latifa Chambers, Cliff’s wife, posted a statement on Instagram announcing his passing.

It’s with deep sorrow that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, passed over due to seizures followed by pneumonia,” she said. I am appreciative of his friends, family, colleagues, and fellow artists who have accompanied him on this trip.

To all of his admirers worldwide, please know that your encouragement was his greatest asset over his entire career. May you rest in peace, Jimmy, my love. I’ll do as you ask. Lilty and Aken, their children, also signed her message.
