The United States Attacks the Islamic State in Nigeria

In northwest Nigeria, where militants have attempted to establish a presence, the United States has started strikes against militants associated with the Islamic State group (IS). According to the US military, the group’s camps in Sokoto state were attacked close to the Nigerian border. Both US and Nigerian officials claim that militants were killed, while the exact number of casualties is unknown.

According to US President Donald Trump, the gang was “terrorist scum” and had been “targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians” during the “deadly” Christmas Day strikes. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Nigeria’s foreign minister, told the BBC that it had “nothing to do with a particular religion” and was a “joint operation.

Tuggar claimed that Nigerian information had been used “for quite some time” to arrange the strikes. Additionally, he did not rule out more strikes. He claimed that the strikes had “nothing to do with Christmas,” citing their late Thursday timing.

Isa Salihu Bashir, a local authority in Sokoto state’s Tangaza region, told the BBC that the strikes had “hit some Lakurawa terrorist camps.” Although the exact number of fighters slain was unknown, he claimed that many had been killed.
