At least on the surface, it appeared to be one of the better in-person encounters between Presidents Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky. This was their sixth meeting in a year, during which time their relationship has deteriorated to the point of needing frequent and laborious repairs.
As they left the Mar-a-Lago dining room, the atmosphere was amicable. Zelensky was dressed in the same sombre black compromise suit that he had worn to the White House in October. Trump described the encounter as “terrific” and inquired as to if Zelensky and his general, who “looks like central casting,” had enjoyed the meal. Uncomfortable, to be sure, but nothing compared to the public humiliation of the Ukrainian leader that took place in the White House in February.
However, the US president’s rhetoric shows that his default posture in negotiations is still to put pressure on Kyiv while pleasing Moscow. Trump once hinted that territory, the most challenging subject of all, would be “taken” in the upcoming months, asking, “Are you better off making a deal now?” The statement, which summarized a conversation between President Vladimir Putin and Trump earlier on Sunday, was very identical to that of Kremlin advisor Yuri Ushakov.
