Negotiators from Russia, Ukraine and the United States have begun their first trilateral talks since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The meetings are taking place in Abu Dhabi, according to the United Arab Emirates Foreign Ministry.
Senior officials from all three countries are involved, although it is not clear if they will meet face to face at any point. While the format of the talks is new, the main disagreements between Moscow and Kyiv remain unchanged.
Expectations are modest despite the high stakes. US President Donald Trump is pressing for a peace agreement in Ukraine, something he has repeatedly promised. This week, he warned that both sides would be “stupid” if they failed to reach a deal. Even so, major issues remain unresolved as US envoys work through intense shuttle diplomacy.
Ukraine is taking part not only because it wants peace, but also to maintain strong ties with Washington. Last year, Kyiv felt the impact when US intelligence sharing and military aid were briefly suspended.
