The European Commission Begins Looking Into Elon Musk’s X

The European Commission has opened a formal investigation into Elon Grok, the chatbot built into X, following criticism over the platform’s failure to prevent the creation of sexually explicit images of real people, including children.

The probe focuses on Grok’s image-editing feature, which was widely used to digitally alter photos of women and underage girls without their consent. According to reports first published by Handelsblatt, the investigation will assess whether X took sufficient steps to reduce the risks linked to the creation and spread of such content.

If the platform is found to have violated the European Union’s Digital Services Act, X could face a fine of up to 6 percent of its global annual revenue.

The Commission’s move comes after growing public concern over the tool’s misuse. Earlier this month, a Commission spokesperson strongly criticised the feature, saying it breached legal standards and had no place within the EU.

Following widespread backlash, X introduced new restrictions preventing Grok from editing images of real people in a sexualised or revealing manner. These limits apply to all users, including those with paid subscriptions. The company also said it had removed sexualised AI-altered images involving children and permanently banned the users responsible.
