After Discovering a Cyber-Security Problem, Services are Racing to Upgrade Their Computer Systems

Organisations and corporations are still trying to upgrade their systems after cyber-security holes were discovered in PHP, a popular programming language. Websites worldwide went offline on Wednesday and Thursday after PHP developers disclosed “critical vulnerabilities” in the back-end language, which has powered online development for decades.

Researchers warned that the “severe” faults might expose millions of sites that use it to potential hackers if not patched, prompting the UK government to take some sites offline as a precaution. So yet, no successful attempts have been reported, but experts believe any impact may take weeks or months to become apparent.

Downing Street stated on Thursday that “some” limited government services “may be offline” while security measures were being implemented. The information I have is that 32 Government services are unavailable and four are partially unavailable,” said technology minister Baroness Lloyd of Effra in the House of Lords. She explained that this “largely resulted from precautionary measures taken to protect systems while security updates and mitigations are applied”.
