A significant political event is taking place in the Chinese capital, including a private meeting of high-ranking officials that may influence the future direction of the ruling Communist Party. The Fifth Plenum, which brings together some 300 Central Committee members, is expected to lead to a “tightening of discipline” among Party members, according to official media. After recent purges, Xi Jinping will have a chance to further solidify his hold on power at the four-day session that began on Monday.
Although the yearly plenums are often quite confidential, a more comprehensive paper and a summary of conclusions will be released afterward. At least once a year, the Party’s central committee meets behind closed doors. Each five-year term of the Central Committee typically consists of seven plenums, which are seen from a distance since they are intended to convey the goals of the leadership.
The date of this year’s meeting is significant since the next Party Congress is one year away, at which time a new central committee will be selected and a new set of priorities will be established. Although the Party’s top leadership is officially chosen by the Central Committee, the actual selection procedures are kept under wraps within the Party elite. After term restrictions are eliminated, Xi will most likely be reappointed as the nation’s leader by the upcoming Party Congress.
