Previously held by Pope Leo XIV, formerly cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, the diocese of Albano in Rome has been given to Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle as its titular bishop. The Vatican announced in a news statement on Saturday that His Eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle, pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelisation in the Section for First Evangelisation and the new specific Churches, had been given the title of the Suburbicarian Church of Albano by the Holy Father.
Following Pope Francis’s death on April 21, Pope Leo XIV was chosen as the new pope of the Catholic Church on May 8. In a Vatican ceremony on May 18, Tagle put the Ring of the Fisherman on the finger of Leo XIV, who was sworn in as the 267th pope of the Catholic Church.
The Ring of the Fisherman symbolises the pontiff’s power as the heir to St. Peter, a fisherman and the Church’s first leader.
Just outside of Rome, the Diocese of Albano is one of seven suburban sees historically connected to cardinal bishops, the highest order in the College of Cardinals.
Tagle has been a cardinal priest of the Church of San Felice da Cantalice in Centocelle since 2012 until being named the Suburbicarian Church of Albano. He was assigned to the same titular church in 2022 when Pope Francis promoted him to the order of cardinal bishops.
