Friedrich Merz, Germany’s Future Chancellor, Reveals Cabinet Positions

Seven ministries will be led by the CDU, seven by the SPD, and three by the CSU. It is now clear which candidates the CDU and CSU intend to appoint to the cabinet. CDU leader and Germany’s next Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has officially announced the CDU’s ministerial nominations. The names were presented at the party’s headquarters, the Konrad Adenauer House in Berlin.

Thorsten Frei – Head of the Federal Chancellery
Thorsten Frei, currently the CDU’s first Parliamentary Secretary, will head the Federal Chancellery. The 51-year-old represents the Schwarzwald-Baar and Oberes Kinzigtal constituency in Baden-Württemberg and is known as a close ally of Merz, having strongly supported his policies in the past.

Dr. Johann Wadephul – Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs
At 62, Johann Wadephul, a seasoned politician from Schleswig-Holstein, will take over the Foreign Ministry. He becomes the first CDU member to hold this position in six decades.

Katherina Reiche – Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy
Katherina Reiche, 51, currently leads the E.ON subsidiary Westenergie and brings her business experience to the cabinet. Reiche, who previously served as a Bundestag member for Brandenburg from 1998 to 2015, will become the first East German to hold this post.

Patrick Schnieder – Federal Minister of Transport
Patrick Schnieder, a Bundestag member since 2009, is set to become Minister of Transport. The 56-year-old from Bitburg in Rhineland-Palatinate is recognized as a transport policy specialist and has served as one of the parliamentary directors of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group.

Karin Prien – Federal Minister of Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth
Karin Prien, who has served as Schleswig-Holstein’s Education Minister since 2017, will now take on a broader federal role. The 59-year-old deputy CDU chairwoman was directly involved in coalition talks and leads the Education, Research, and Innovation Committee within the federal CDU. She also acts as the spokesperson for the CDU’s Jewish Forum.
