Three days after Israel lifted an 11-week embargo, UN personnel have gathered more than 90 truckloads of humanitarian assistance within the Gaza Strip. On Wednesday evening, the aid, which included medical supplies, bread, and baby food, was collected from the Kerem Shalom crossing and transported to warehouses for distribution. Images showed a bakery using part of the flour to make bread. According to the UN, instability along the Israeli military-approved single access route caused the delays.
Israeli officials said they permitted an extra 100 truck loads to pass through Kerem Shalom on Wednesday. It was “nowhere near enough to meet the vast needs in Gaza,” according to the UN. Due to severe shortages of staple items and rapidly rising costs, humanitarian agencies have issued warnings about severe starvation among the 2.1 million people.
According to the Reuters news agency, Majed Abu Ramadan, the health minister for the Palestinian Authority and a resident of the occupied West Bank, told reporters in Geneva on Thursday that 29 children and elderly people have perished in the past few days due to “starvation-related” conditions. According to an estimate by the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), half a million people are at risk of hunger in the upcoming months.
