In the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky, where citizens are stranded without access to electricity, water, or food, a ceasefire has been declared. The restricted ceasefire is being observed, according to Ukrainian officials and Russia’s defence ministry. According to the White House, US First Lady Melania Trump negotiated the ceasefire, which will permit relief delivery and a civilian evacuation on Friday. Along the front line in the Kherson region, Oleshky is encircled by Russian forces on one side and Ukrainian positions on the other by the Dnipro River.
To survive, several locals have turned to cooking yard weeds. They have told the BBC that they are really hungry and wish to leave. One local expressed anxiety that the ceasefire would not last, stating, I don’t believe in Russia’s humanity.” Kyiv estimates that only 1,700 people are currently residing in Oleshky, but up to 6,000 individuals—including 200 children remain in the city and its environs.
24,000 people lived there before to the conflict, but Russia took control of it in the early stages of its full-scale invasion in February 2022. The situation has gotten so bad that not only is it very hard to bring supplies into the city, but it’s also quite risky to flee because the routes out of Oleshky are mined and vulnerable to drone attacks.
